hanyagolják el magukat… de még sokat kell tanulniok, és előbb jól rágják
meg, hogy mit akarnak mondani, ha azt óhajtják, hogy én elolvassam vagy
csak támogassam is iparkodásukat. Azonkívül a magyar könyvkiállítók és
kiadó munkások már csak mostoha viszonyaiknál fogva se tudják
illedelmesen kiállítani a kezdő magyar irók műveit; Ausztria nem ad
nekik kölcsön jobb papirt és elég nagy betűket, úgy hogy aztán a magyar
könyv oly rosszúl sikerül, hogy végül, többnyire, meg se jelenik.
Elza. – De, papuskám, te tévedsz! A magyar írók között sok van, a kiknek
a munkáit lefordítják németre…
A báró. – Te ezt összetéveszted azzal, hogy a magyar írók németből
fordítanak tanulás és gyakorlat czéljából…
Elza. – És más nyelvekre is. A magyar könyvek kiállítása pedig jobb,
mint a németeké…
A báró. – Már látom, hogy te nekem többnyire magyar könyveket fogsz
felírni, de nem bánom, mert ez hazafiasabb, és azt hiszem, jutányosabb
is. Aztán előttem fő az utódok, a kik, meglehet, már nem is kívánnak
német könyveket olvasni, míg én rám nézve előnyösebb kevés számú magyar
könyvet olvasni, mint sok külföldi művet, melyek elrontják a szemet, és
utóvégre is az van belőle, hogy csak elalszik az ember. Azonfelül
miattam lehet, hogy neked van igazad, és tőlem senki se veheti rossz
néven, ha én az én leányomnak jobban hiszek, mint a _Neue Presse_nek.
Csak a humorisztikus művekben nem adok neked igazat. Ezek maradjanak
németül; mert a legjobb viczcz is magyarul nem hangzik olyan
mulatságosan, mint az eredetiben. És mivel most el akarsz menni, nem
tudom hová, állítsd nekem össze a jegyzéket holnapra.
Elza. – Meglesz, papuskám. De mondd, egyéb utasítást nem adsz? Nem
akartál még valamit mondani a könyvekre nézve?
A báró. – Na, magától értetődik, hogy a tudományos könyvek
vallás-erkölcsös szellemben legyenek; és legyen egy pár díszkönyv a
rókavadászokról, a hol a rókavadászok az ő vörös frakkjukban ki legyenek
festve, arra az esetre, ha netán egy előkelő vendégünk jönne, a ki a
szalonban olvasni akar valamit. Megjegyzendő, hogy egy-két forintra ne
nézz, és gondoskodjál könyvekről, a mikben a képek a fő, és a nyomtatás
csak arra való, hogy ne kelljen elolvasni. Végül az összes könyvek
vastag papirra és nagy betűvel legyenek nyomtatva, széles margóval és
üres lapokkal a fejezetek között; mert, mint egy feuilletonban olvastam
egy jó író tollából, a sűrűn nyomtatott rossz könyv nem ér annyit, mint
a ritkán nyomtatott jeles. Általában egy könyvtárnál az a fő, hogy
mindenben mértéket tartsunk; a tulságosan sok olvasmány soha se
élvezetes, ellenben mindig van valami jó vagy legalább kellemes abban az
olvasmányban, a melyik kevés.
