Põllumeeste majanduse edenemiseks töötas C. R. Jakobson agaralt ja õhutas põllumeeste seltside asutamist. Põllumeeste seltsi kõrwale tekkisiwad 1887 karskuse seltsid; need lagunesiwad suure rutuga laiale, ilma et ometi rohkele joomisele küllalt oleksiwad suutnud tõkkeid teha. – Ju waremalt katsuti rahwast meresõidule waimustada ja asutati 1879 mereasjanduse tarwis „Linda“ selts, kuid harjumata juhatuse tõttu sattus uus ettewõte pea karile. See karile jõudmine ei pannud mitte üksi laewasõidu edenemisele piiri, waid mõnele muulegi rahwa ettewõtmisele.

Jõudsamalt wõisiwad seltsid 1905 a. manifesti ilmumise järele sigineda. Ja neid ongi rohkel mõõdul siginenud, sest et uus seltside kohta antud seadus nende siginemist kergendas. Ju enne seltside seaduse ilmumist oli kord korralt muid kui laulu, põllumeeste ja karskuse seltsisid asutatud; seaduse ilmumise järele tekkis neid warsti hulga kaupa. Uutest seltsidest olgu kõige päält hariduse seltsid nimetatud, ülesandega rahwa sekka haridust wälja laotada. Rahwa eluparanduseks aitawad palju kaasa laenu ja hoiuühisused, ostu ühisused ja mõnesugused seltsid, mis ühistegewuse alusele asutatud. Isegi hulk spordi seltsisid on elusse tekkinud. Kui ka uuemal ajal mõnel seltsil raskustega on wõidelda, püüawad nad ometi oma ülesannet täita. Mitmed wanemad seltsid linnas on enestele kindlad alused muretsenud, awarad ja kohased seltsimajad ja teatrid ehitanud. Teerajajana teatri ehituses esines Wanemuine 1905, järgnesiwad Endla ja teised, kuni Estonia 1913 oma teatri- ja kontserdimajaga sarnastele ehitustele nagu krooni pähä pani. Ja tõesti, rahwa käekäik wõib seda paremaks saada, mida rohkem õigele alusele rajatud ühistegewus maad leiab.

Majanduslisel alal sammub Eesti, penikoorma saapad jalas, nagu wastne merest tõusnud mees pikemaks ja kehakamaks sirgudes, waimlisel alal astub ta palju jalu edasi, stoilisel resignatsionil elu saatuse kätte usaldades; selja taga kasuweksli omanik taotawate kätega. Sakslus imeb muistseid magusaid mälestusi endistel loorberidel hingates ja ajaloolistest õigustest hoolimata olewikku hukka mõistes. Ajaratas aga weereb edasi Läänemere maade rahwaid teel tõugates.
