järvi, sen rannalla kasvoi tuuheita puita. Riensin järveä kohti
ja saavuin jo vallan lähelle, saavuin jo sen rannalle. Ojensin jo
käteni ammentaakseni sen kirkasta vettä ja kostuttaakseni kuivuneita
huuliani, kun järvi ja koko keidas katosi, ja minä uudelleen syöksyin
erämaan toivottomaan pimeyteen. Kirkas keitaani oli ollut petollinen

kiitollisuutta vaan, lapsen viatonta, puhdasta kiitollisuutta!
Vastustamaton kaiho kouristi Haoman sydäntä ja hän tunsi valtavata
tarvetta lähteä henkien maille sielunsa elvyttävää hohdetta etsimään.
Kun hänen mielensä kaiho ja ahdistus oli noussut ylimmilleen, huokasi
hän:
-- Oi, Verethragna, päästä minut sinne, missä hän nyt harhailee, että
epätoivoinen sieluni löytäisi rauhaa hänen valo-olentonsa näystä!
Näin rukoiltuaan hän syöksyi kosken vaahtoiseen pyörteeseen, joka
alttiina sulki hänet pehmeään, lumivalkeaan helmaansa.
Alhaalla laaksossa, lähellä kivisiltaa, tarttui hänen hengetön
ruumiinsa kiinni rantapensaan oksiin.
Kerivan oli haukkuen seurannut alas koskenrantaa, ja nähdessään

epätoivoisesti maata vastaan. Hetken kuluttua hän nousi pystyyn ja
peitti vaippansa liepeellä kasvonsa.
Kun hän viimein poistui, valmistautuakseen vainajalle viimeistä
palvelusta täyttämään, ei yksikään kyynel noussut hänen silmäänsä, ja
hän, tunsi rintansa jäätyneeksi ja vallan kuin kivettyneeksi.
Kaikki valmistukset suoritettuaan, hän hautasi Haoman ruumiin kosken
partaalle, tuuhean plataanin juurelle.
Itse poistui hän sitten luolaansa, vielä tietämättä, jäisikö
samoelemaan samean elonvirran rannalle, vai seuraisiko hänkin
kunnioitetun ja rakkaan vartijaansa jälkiä.

Anahita oli haudattu linnakumpunsa kohdalle, vallan lähellä joen
rantaa kohoavan tumman sypressilehdon laidalle.
Vuorijoen vesi virtasi tyyntyneenä sen ohi, tuoden suven
loppupuolella Haoman haudalta tervehdyksen: pensaista varisseita
suurten tummanpunaisten ja keltaisten ruusujen tuoksuvia terälehtiä.
