Sittah.

Saladin. Und ich,--ich schaudere
Vor einer größern Rührung fast zurück!
Bereite dich nur drauf, so gut du kannst.
Sittah.
Wie?
Saladin. Nathan, auf ein Wort! ein Wort!
(Indem Nathan zu ihm tritt, tritt Sittah zu dem Geschwister, ihm
ihre Teilnahme zu bezeigen; und Nathan und Saladin sprechen leiser.)
Hör! hör doch, Nathan! Sagtest du vorhin
Nicht--?
Nathan. Was?
Saladin. Aus Deutschland sei ihr Vater nicht
Gewesen; ein geborner Deutscher nicht.
Was war er denn? Wo war er sonst denn her?
Nathan.
Das hat er selbst mir nie vertrauen wollen.
Aus seinem Munde weiß ich nichts davon.
Saladin.
Und war auch sonst kein Frank? kein Abendländer?
Nathan.
Oh! daß er der nicht sei, gestand er wohl.
Er sprach am liebsten Persisch...
Saladin. Persisch? Persisch?
Was will ich mehr?--Er ist's! Er war es!
Nathan. Wer?
Saladin.
Mein Bruder! ganz gewiß! Mein Assad! ganz
Gewiß!
Nathan. Nun, wenn du selbst darauf verfällst:--
Nimm die Versichrung hier in diesem Buche!
(Ihm das Brevier überreichend.)
Saladin (es begierig aufschlagend).
Ah! seine Hand! Auch die erkenn ich wieder!
Nathan.
Noch wissen sie von nichts! Noch steht's bei dir
Allein, was sie davon erfahren sollen!
Saladin (indes er darin geblättert).
Ich meines Bruders Kinder nicht erkennen?
Ich meine Neffen--meine Kinder nicht?
Sie nicht erkennen? ich? Sie dir wohl lassen?
(Wieder laut.)
Sie sind's! Sie sind es, Sittah, sind's! Sie sind's!
Sind beide meines... deines Bruders Kinder!
(Er rennt in ihre Umarmungen.)
Sittah (ihm folgend).
Was hör ich!--Konnt's auch anders, anders sein!--
Saladin (zum Tempelherrn).
Nun mußt du doch wohl, Trotzkopf, mußt mich lieben!
(Zu Recha.)
Nun bin ich doch, wozu ich mich erbot?
Magst wollen, oder nicht!
Sittah. Ich auch! ich auch!
Saladin (zum Tempelherrn zurück).
Mein Sohn! mein Assad! meines Assads Sohn!
Tempelherr.
Ich deines Bluts!--So waren jene Träume,
Womit man meine Kindheit wiegte, doch--
Doch mehr als Träume!
(Ihm zu Füßen fallend.)
Saladin (ihn aufhebend).
Seht den Bösewicht!
Er wußte was davon, und konnte mich
Zu seinem Mörder machen wollen! Wart!
(Unter stummer Wiederholung allseitiger Umarmungen fällt der Vorhang.)
