Extendieron el cuerpo del suicida sobre el muelle mientras llegaba el
juzgado. Aquel espectáculo tenía profundamente impresionados a todos los
circunstantes, entre los que se hallaban personas de los dos bandos
rivales.
Después que llegó el juez y se instruyeron las debidas diligencias,
colocaron en una camilla el cadáver, y lo transportaron a su casa,
porque don Rosendo, que sabía la noticia, lo reclamaba. Fué una
procesión tristísima al través de las calles de la villa. Los vecinos se
asomaban a los balcones, pálidos, inquietos, con la tristeza en el
semblante. Gonzalo gozaba de generales simpatías.
Don Rosendo, poseído de vivo dolor, no quiso ver el cadáver de su hijo
político. Se encerró en su cuarto; pero dispuso que se le colocase en el
mejor salón de la casa sobre una mesa cubierta de terciopelo, que se
trajesen de todas partes flores y coronas, y se preparase un entierro
suntuoso.
Cecilia, por uno de esos esfuerzos heroicos que estaba avezada a hacer
sobre su alma y su cuerpo, supo encerrar su pena en el fondo del
corazón. Veíasela lívida, sí, pero tranquila, disponiendo por la casa lo
necesario para recibir el cuerpo de su cuñado. Cuando llegó, ella misma
ayudó a colocarlo en el sitio, después que se le hubo amortajado. Lo
cubrió de flores, encendió los cirios, adornó la habitación con negros
crespones. Después dispuso que velase el cadáver una hermana de la
caridad en compañía de ella.
Dejáronlas al fin solas. Rezaron largo rato de rodillas. Cuando
terminaron su rezo, Cecilia rogó a la monja que fuese a la cocina a dar
orden para que se le hiciese te, porque estaba desfallecida.
En cuanto la monja salió, alzóse vivamente. Y sacando unas tijeras,
cortó un mechón de cabellos de la cabeza de su cuñado, que ocultó en el
seno. Cortó después de los suyos otro, y temblorosa y agitada, lo metió
entre las manos cruzadas del cadáver. Luego le contempló un instante. Y
bajando la cabeza, cubrió de besos aquel rostro inanimado. Los primeros
y los últimos que le daba.
La esposa, la única y verdadera esposa de aquel hombre, no pudo al fin
resistir tanto dolor y rodó por el suelo sin conocimiento.
