mindenesetre két hatalmas erkölcsi erő lakott erkölcstelenségében:
hagyomány és tekintély. Nem gondolják, hogy a léleknek nagy és hideg
előitéletek nélkül valósága kell hozzá: habozás és könyörület nélkül
széttépni ama szálakat, s a kalandor vakmerő önbizalma, senki ember
létükre azt érezni: vagyok olyan legény, mint ti, s tulemelkedni a
hagyományon és fittyet hányni ama tekintélynek?! Csak az a Crispi, aki
fütyült a bigámia-ellenes törvényre s nyugodtan vette nőül állitólagos
első felesége életében a másodikat: csak az fütyülhetett Nápoly és
Szicilia s az egész legitimista világrend hagyományaira és tekintélyeire
– s ugyanazon Crispi, ki fölötte állónak érezte magát a rendes
tisztességi és illedelmi törvényeknek, az érezhette magát az ólomgolyók
hatalma felett állónak is. Vagy megforditva: ugyanazon Crispi, kinek
vakmerő ereje s hatalmas elfogulatlansága hősi időkben hős tetteket
szült: a rend s a béke közönséges ideiben közönségessé vagy akár
ocsmánynyá törpült. De még ekkor is: csak az a Crispi, ki baromi módon
tudta elgázolni a szegény földmivesek forradalmát és volt szabadsághős
létére vérbefojtani a nép szabadságmozgalmát: csak az a Crispi tudta
cinikusan megtagadni saját multját és szövetkezni a poroszszal s az
osztrákkal, s ezzel körülbelül megmenteni Olaszországot. S Garibaldi, ez
a dicső nagy gyerek, hamar akasztófára jut vala s elveszti hazáját, ha
nem állanak mögötte az ilyen betyár Crispik, az elfogulatlan Cavourok s
a minden hájjal megkent Viktor Emánuelek. Gyerekes emberek, rókák,
kalandorok – de mit tegyünk? Rendes és tisztességes polgárok nem igen
döntögetnek trónokat, hanem azt mondják: haj, haj, nem jól van ez igy!
Aminthogy nagykoru emberek sem igen épitenek barrikádokat, hanem ha a
főutcát elállják a zsandárok, vérző szivvel fordulnak be a mellékutcába!
Röviden: a történelem vajudásainál való bábáskodáshoz olyan
tulajdonságok kellenek, melyek ritkán találtatnak a rend s az erkölcs
tiszteletének amaz elegyében, mely a tisztelnivaló polgártársat teszi.
Nem mondom, hogy ez jól van igy, de azt mondom, hogy gyakorta igy van, s
nagy embereinkkel gyakorta ugy vagyunk, mint a szeretőnkkel: jobb
szeretnők, ha tisztességes volna, de akkor nem is volna a szeretőnk!
