szeretett és én csak mégis szeretem. Az epedésem mélységes erejével
vissza akarok szállni hozzá, a ki messze van, lekötni hozzám, a ki
elhagyott, magamnak tartani meg szűzen, a ki megcsalt. Csak még egyszer
csapna össze a szenvedélyünk, csak még egyszer mondhatnám az enyémnek!
A tökéletes pusztulásom az, a mit a sorsomtól kérek. Nem akarok egy
cseppnyi boldogságot, egy sugárkát abból a sok fényből, egy parányit a
gazdag jólétből, melyekről azt mondják, hogy mind meg vannak ezen a
világon. Csendes fészek, hű feleség, vidám gyermekgügyögés, virágos
akáczczal beültetett udvar!
… A lepkefogó összetörve a kezemben, a pilléim mind elszálltanak. Az a
két kék szem nékem édes nem lehet s csak azért kergettem, mert ő küldött
utána. Családi tűzhelyem, meleg nyoszolyám soha sem lesz nekem s nem
szegődhetik társul mellém az álmok szelidlelkű nője. Nem is tudnék
meghuzódni akáczos udvarházban, mennék együtt a fecskével, szaladnék más
tájra a tavasz után. Gyermek-gagyogás dajkának való, szilárdan álló
iróasztal annak, a ki bankárnak született, nyugalmas csend, a kiben
megaludt a vér. Nekem a haldokláskor is zaj, zene kell, szélvészes
fergeteg még akkor is, ha gyönge naszádon bitangul ki vagyok verve a
tengerekre. Látva s érezve a szenvedélyt, vad vihar támad magamban is,
kitágul s kidagad vitorlalelkem, érzem, hogy van erőm, hogy élek, érzem,
miként nem halnék meg soha.
Hát künn vagyok a tengeren, gyönge naszádon, szélvészes fergetegben.
Köröttem hullámzik a beláthatatlan óczeán, csupa élő hullámból csinálva.
Versengenek, tolonganak egymásra, a düh tajtékja a hab, mig elnyomják
egymást könyörtelen. Hallom az éktelen zsibongást, az élő hullámok
moraját, még nem vagyok hajótörött, de minden pillanatban az lehetek. És
a tenger örök zivatarja, a hullámok önző szenvedélye bennem is
szenvedélyt teremt, nem félek s mégis leküzdhetlen vágygyal vágyódom el
e szörnyű óczeánról, a hová pedig lelkesedve jöttem. Lihegve a
küzdelemben, kidagadt szemmel nézem a messze eget, bámulom nyugatról
keletnek, északról délnek, keresve azt a részt, mely az én világom fölé
borul. Hánykodó szivem a delejtűm, az mondja meg, hogy az a felhőtlenűl
maradt kis darab azur a szeretőm fészke felett mosolyog. Oda küldöm hát
az érzésemet, a szerelmem s ugy kell, hogy onnan nap ragyogjon le neki.

Ez a legutolsó lap, mely mintha a legutolsó perczemet jelentené. Az
egész életemet érzem vissza benne és ez a percz, mintha az öröklétbe
mulnék…
