Éjjel a lámpa mellett ültek ketten, szótlan, a két nő, az egy férfi két
nője. Az anya s a menyasszony.
Azóta nem ébredt fel, s nem tért magához, oly kinos nézni, amint a
szervezet gépiesen dolgozik, fuj, liheg, tüzel. Egyre váltják a jeges
borogatást, az orvosságot beadni szinte lehetetlen, szétfolyik. S alig
köhög, le kell törölni.
Margit ugy mered rá, folyton nézi, ijedt, rémült szivvel. Nem érti, hogy
mit csinál. Mi ez. Mit akar. Mi történt. Hisz nem látszik rajta semmi.
Mért nem akar? Mért nem szedi össze magát.
Elaludni nem bir, csak ül a széken, kemény, egyenes széken félve s a
szüleire gondol, már haza kellett volna menni, a bál miatt maradt.
Szegény kis anyjára gondol, az hogy tudná őt ápolni… nem ugy, mint ez
itt a fiát, csak irja a…
Éjféltájban, ugy látszik, elszunditottak. Valaki megfogta a kezét,
milyen forró… Miklós.
– Jobb igy…
Ráijedt.
– Hogy? Kedves? Mit akar mondani szivem…
– Megmaradok a maga emlékében tisztán, jónak, szépnek, hűnek,
engedelmes, jó kis fiu…
Margit zokogott.
– Ha megtörténik… ha megismer… akkor megtudta volna, hogy rossz vagyok:
gonosz.
– Nem szivem, maga jó. Maga a legjobb a világon, – sirta a kislány.
Miklós konokul megrázta a fejét:
– Nem, én nem vagyok jó: én ember vagyok.
Bejött az anya a neszre, a borogatást készitette.
– Feltegyük fiacskám?
– Minek az?
– Mit mondasz?
– Minek már az?
– Tegyük fel fiam. Feltegyük?
– Jó.
Margit is olyan rémülve nézte. Már ő is leszámolt, tudta, belegyőződött:
minek már az.
Egy óra mulva Miklós felállott.
Letette a lábát a földre és felállt.
Iszonyodva néztek rá, a dadus odafutott s derékon átölelve tartotta.
Felemelte a karját.
– Mi hárman… Mi hárman.
S odanézett baljára, ott állott Jákób, a hosszu szakállu, csillogó
szemü, ravasz öreg zsidó.
– Igen, én régen tudom: te elvesztetted a fetist és te adtad nekünk a
Láthatatlant, ne tagadd!
Jobbjára nézett és ott állott Pál, a másik komoly, konok zsidó, szent
dolgok ügynöke.
– És te csináltad meg az uj üzletet, a szeretettel…
Magába merülten suttogta.
– Te vetitted ki Uram a lélekből a Szeretetet a világra! De ez csak
káprázat… Az élet más…
Akkor az ujját feltartotta és a szoba felé üvöltötte:
– Emberek: figyelmeztetlek benneteket a természet örök törvényeire…
Még beszélni akart, nem birt, végigbukott a földön.
Mire feltették az ágyra, megkezdődött az agónia.
És a két nő sirástalan rémülettel ijedten nézett egymásra, a megszünt
férfiu két idegen asszonya.
Elvégeztetett: de semmi sem tisztáztatott.
