raivanneet itselleen tien vuorien ja pensaikkojen poikki. Heitä oli
vain kaksitoista miestä, mutta heidän hajaantuneet huutonsa saattoivat
sissit pelkäämään suurtakin sotavoimaa. Hyökkääjien rivit joutuivat
sekasortoon. Taistelu loppui, sissit heittivät aseensa pois ja
hajaantuivat rajusti juosten piilopaikkoihinsa vuorten lomiin.
Taavi seurasi heitä joukkoinensa. Se oli loppumaton, vaivalloinen
ajo, jota kesti suurimman osan päivää. Iltapuolella oli toinen puoli
sisseistä vangittu ja sidottu nuoriin, mutta sitte täytyi Taavin
keskeyttää ajo, sillä nousi hirveän voimakas ukkosilma. Taivas
liekehti, salamat risteilivät ilmassa, vihurit kaatoivat jäykimmät
männyt tai salama ne halkaisi kahtia. Ei koskaan kukaan ollut nähnyt
tämäntapaista rajuilmaa näillä seuduilla, vaikka kesäisin ukkonen
täällä oli melkein jokapäiväinen vieras.
Kuuden aikaan illalla rajuilma asettui ja taivas selkeni. Väsyneinä,
märkinä, nälkäisinä läksi Taavi joukkoineen vuortenrotkoista, joista
sissit olivat etsineet turvaa, ja palasi vankeineen Ljungarsin kylään.
He kulkivat jälleen lähteen ohitse. Sen kuivalla hiekkapohjalla,
kallioiden varjossa, lepäsi nuorukainen verissään. Knuutti Steninpoika

verettömiä huulia. Aivan kallion juurella hän huomasi Ljungarsin
valkoisen tytön tutun haamun. Hän näytti surullisemmalta, hennommalta
ja hoikemmalta kuin ennen. Kultainen vyö hänen uumillaan oli kavennut
hienoksi langaksi, joka vaivoin näytti pitävän hänen utuista vartaloaan
koossa. Puiden latvoissa kävi hiljainen, sanaton humina. Taavin vielä
katsellessa utukuvaa katkesi hieno kultalanka hänen uumiltaan ja koko
olento haihtui ilmaan. Hän kääntyi taaksensa; kuoleva oli vetänyt
viimeisen hengenvetonsa.
Myrskyistä päivää ja ukkosilmaa seurasi kirkas ja tyyni kesäilta, joka
ei pimennyt yöksi. Mutta sellainen ei ollut Suomen kohtalo Kustaa
Vaasan ja hänen seuraajiensa hallituksen aikana; sillä myrskyjä
ei puuttunut. Se ennusti vain onnellisen tulevaisuuden valoisaa
iltaa päivinä, jotka kerran tulevat. Väkivallan laiton, verinen ja
mielivaltainen aikakausi oli loppunut. Ja vuorien ja vesien taa laskeva
