Kuten monesti olemme koettaneet osottaa, eksyi kirkko keskiajan
pimeässä eksymistään pitämään koko kristittyä maailmaa näkyvänä

turnaajapeleihin, niinkuin luostarielämään, valtion toimiin, kuten
jumalanpalveluksen menoihin. Tieteet ja taiteet, trubadurien
lemmenlaulut ja virrensepittäjäin säveleet, koulut, yliopistot,
ammattikunnat, sanalla sanoen kaikki mahtui ja sopi tuohon maalliseen
Kristus-valtakuntaan, jonka johtajana "Pietarin jälkeinen" oli.
Monessa suhteessa jalo oli kyllä tuo keski-ajan rohkea ajatus saada
koko maailmaa edustamaan Jumalan valtakuntaa, vaan kuolemaan oli se
tuomittu, sillä Herra todistaa: "ei minun valtakuntani ole tästä
maailmasta". Vähällä ei kristikunta kuitenkaan tästä aatteesta
luopunut. Innostuneen nuorukaisen tavoin taisteli se sen puolesta,
kunnes tappiot alkoivat käydä siksi julkisiksi, että sen toivotonna
täytyi heittää aseensa maahan. Kirkko oli toivonut voittavansa
maailman, vaan maailma olikin sen voittanut.
Niin -- toivottomalta näyttää kirkon tila, jos katselemme ainoastaan
tuon pitkän taistelun kaikille näkyvää tulosta, mikäli tämä tulos
keski-ajan lopussa ilmenee, vaan jos asiaa likemmin tarkastamme,
emme saata olla huomaamatta, että Kaikkivaltiaan viisas neuvo kaiken
tuon nimettömän onnettomuuden uhallakin on pelastava Hänen kirkkonsa
perikadosta ja luova kristikunnalle uuden, valoisamman tulevaisuuden.

jotka ovat kutsutut muita neuvomaan, niin ovat kuitenkin ne ehdot
jo olemassa, jotka kristikunta tarvitsee, voidaksensa ryhtyä
uskonpuhdistuksen suureen työhön. Eikä ole Herran seurakunta niin
turmeltunut, ettei se enää tahtoisi jatkaa totuuden suurta taistelua,
eikä kirkko niin syvään lokaan uupunut, että tuo kauan aiottu
uudistustyö, johon niin monesti turhaan oli ryhdytty, siitä syystä
olisi mahdotonta. Herran armosta on säilynyt pieni joukko, jonka
Hän vielä tuntee omaksensa. Jesuksen Kristuksen valtakunta ei ole
kukistunut tuossa kovassa taistelussa, jonka alaisena se keski-ajan
pitkien vuosisatojen vaiheissa on ollut. Sen voitto on ennen pitkää
maailmaa hämmästyttävä, kun Herran hetki on tullut.
Vaikka kaikki ponnistukset kirkon uudistamiseksi näihin asti
olivatkin olleet turhat, ei onnellisemman ajan toivo kuitenkaan
vielä viidennentoista vuosisadan lopussakaan ollut kokonaan
masentunut. Siellä täällä kuuluu ennustavia ääniä, jotka todistavat

vuosisadan lopulla Fransiskani-munkki _Juhana Hilten_, joka moittien

vankilaan: "kernaasti kärsin kaikki Kristuksen tähden, koska en ole
vastustanut itse munkkilaitosta, vaan ainoastaan siinä ilmaantuneita
paheita. Mutta v. 1516 on toinen tuleva; häntä ette voi masentaa,
vaan hän on kukistava teidät". Eräs toinen munkki, _Andreas Proles_
(k. 1503), joka oli _Himmelpforte_ nimisen luostarin priiori,
puhui niinikään monta huomattavaa sanaa ennen pitkää tapahtuvasta
uskonpuhdistuksesta, todistaen, että "paavin valta on sortuva,
sillä se on kohonnut liika korkeaksi". Usein sanoi hän munkeilleen:
"olette kuulleet raamatun todistuksen, että Jumalan armo olkoon ainoa
kerskauksemme. Veljet, kristinusko kaipaa perinpohjaista uudistusta".
Kun häneltä kysyttiin, miksi ei hän ryhtynyt kirkkoa uudistamaan,
vastasi hän: "olen jo vanha ja sitä paitse semmoiseen työhön aivan
kykenemätön. Mutta Jumala on herättävä nuoruuden voimalla ja hengellä
varustetun sankarin, joka on alottava uskonpuhdistuksen ja vastustava
erehdyksiä; te opitte käsittämään hänen siunausta tuottavaa
virkaansa". -- Tuommoiset ajatukset ovat koittavan aamun enteitä,
miten pimeä vielä onkin. Hän, joka on "maailman valkeus", on nytkin
virittämässä toivon valoa kristikunnassa, jotta Hänen omansa eivät
uupuisi epätoivoon, kun keski-ajan kolkko ilta joutuu. Jesus Kristus
ei ole kirkkoansa vieläkään hyljännyt, vaikka sen syntivelka onkin
kauhean suuri. Hän on väleen kirkastava itsensä opetuslapsilleen ja
