sahen wir erst, wie trefflich sie sei. Er wollte fast gar nicht
aufhören zu spielen. Risach ließ ihm noch über ihr Fach ein
wasserdichtes Lederbehältnis machen. Nach mehreren Tagen nahm er
Abschied und verließ uns.
Wir machten alle eine kleine Reise in das Ahornwirtshaus, und ich
stellte Kaspar und alle Andern, die mit mir in Verbindung gewesen
waren, Risach, Mathilden, meinen Eltern und Natalien vor. Wir blieben
sechs Tage in dem Ahornhause. Von da gingen wir in den Sternenhof. Die
Tünche war nun überall von ihm weggenommen worden, und er stand in
seiner reinen, ursprünglichen Gestalt da. Auch hier wurden wir in die
Wohnung eingeführt, die während meiner Abwesenheit für uns hergestellt
worden war. Sie konnte in dem weitläufigen Gebäude viel größer sein
als die im Asperhofe. Sie war zu einer vollständigen Haushaltung
hergerichtet.
Von dem Sternenhofe gingen wir in die Stadt. Dort machten wir alle
Besuche, welche in den Kreisen meiner Eltern und in denen Mathildens
notwendig waren. Risach stellte manchem Freunde seine angenommene und
neuvermählte Tochter nebst ihrem Gatten und ihrer Mutter vor. Ich
erfuhr, daß meine Vermählung mit Natalie Tarona Aufsehen errege; ich
erfuhr, daß insbesondere einige meiner Freunde - sie hatten sich
wenigstens immer so genannt - geäußert haben, das sei unbegreiflich.
Nataliens Neigung zu mir war mir stets ein Geschenk und daher
unbegreiflich; da aber nun diese es aussprachen, begriff ich, daß
es nicht unbegreiflich sei. Ich besuchte meinen Juwelenfreund, der
wirklich ein Freund geblieben war. Er hatte die innigste Freude
über mein Glück. Ich führte ihn in unsere Familien ein. Bekannt
war er mit allen Teilen schon lange gewesen. Ich dankte ihm sehr
für die prachtvolle Fassung der Diamanten und Rubinen und des
Smaragdschmuckes. Er fühlte sich über Risachs und meines Vaters Urteil
sehr beglückt.
»Wenn wir solche Kunden in großer Zahl hätten, wie diese zwei Männer
sind, teurer Freund«, sagte er, »dann würde unsere Beschäftigung bald
an die Grenzen der Kunst gelangen, ja sich mit ihr vereinigen. Wir
würden freudig arbeiten, und die Käufer würden erkennen, daß die
geistige Arbeit auch einen Preis habe wie die Steine und das Gold.«
Ich nahm bei ihm eine sehr wertvolle und mit Kunst verzierte Uhr als
Gegenscherz für Eustachs Mappenschrein. Klotilde hatte sie ausgewählt.
Für Roland ließ ich einen Rubin in einen Ring fassen, daß er ihn zur
Erinnerung an mich trage und meine Dankbarkeit für seine Bemühungen
zur Auffindung der Ergänzungen der Pfeilerverkleidungen anerkenne.
»Er ist ohnehin ein Nebenbuhler von mir«, sagte ich, »er hat Natalien
oft lange und bedeutend angesehen.«
»Das hat einen sehr unschuldigen Grund«, entgegnete mein Gastfreund,
»Roland erwarb sich ein Liebchen mit gleichen Augen und Haaren, wie
sie Natalie besitzt. Er hat uns das öfter gesagt. Das Mädchen ist die
Tochter eines Forstmeisters im Gebirge und ihm äußerst zugetan. Da
nun der Arme ihren Anblick oft lange entbehren muß, so sah er zur
Erquickung Natalien an. Es hat Schwierigkeiten mit diesem jungen
Manne, ich wünsche sein Wohl. Er kann ein bedeutender Künstler werden
oder auch ein unglücklicher Mensch, wenn sich nehmlich sein Feuer, das
der Kunst entgegen wallt, von seinem Gegenstande abwendet und sich
gegen das Innere des jungen Mannes richtet. Ich hoffe aber, daß ich
alles werde ins Gleiche bringen können.«
Da alle notwendigen Dinge in der Stadt abgetan waren, wurde die
Rückreise angetreten, und zwar in den Asperhof. Die Zeit der
Rosenblüte war herangerückt, und heuer sollte sie von den vereinigten
Familien als ein Denkzeichen der Vergangenheit und aber auch als eins
der Zukunft zum ersten Male in dieser Vereinigung und mit besonderer
Festlichkeit begangen werden. Mein Vater sollte sehen, welche Gewalt
die Menge und die Mannigfaltigkeit auszuüben im Stande ist, wenn diese
Menge und Mannigfaltigkeit auch nur lauter Rosen sind. Nach Verlauf
der Rosenblüte sollte alles und jedes, das durch diese Vermählung
unterbrochen worden war, in das alte Geleise zurückkehren.
Da wir in dem Asperhofe angekommen waren, gelangte ich erst zu einiger
Ruhe. Da sah ich auch gelegentlich die Papiere an, die uns Risach und
der Vater gegeben hatten, und erstaunte sehr. Beide enthielten für uns
viel mehr, als wir nur entfernt vermutet hatten. Risach wollte bis zu
seinem Tode das Haus in der Art wie bisher fort bewirtschaften, damit,
wie er sagte, er seinen Nachsommer bis zum Ende ausgenießen könne.
Unser Rat und unsere Hilfe in der Bewirtschaftung wird ihm Freude
machen. Einen namhaften Teil seiner Barschaft hatte er uns übergeben.
Und weil öfter zwei Familien in dem Asperhofe sein können, so lagen
den Papieren Pläne bei, daß auf einem schönen Platze zwischen dem
Rosenhause und dem Meierhofe, hart am Getreide, ein neues Haus
aufgeführt und sogleich zum Baue geschritten werden möge. Aber auch
das von dem Vater uns Übergebene war der gesammten Habe Risachs
ebenbürtig und übertraf weit meine Erwartungen. Als wir unsern Dank
abstatteten und ich mein Befremden ausdrückte, sagte der Vater: »Du
kannst darüber ganz ruhig sein; ich tue mir und Klotilden keinen
Abbruch. Ich habe auch meine heimlichen Freuden und meine
Leidenschaften gehabt. Das geben verachtete bürgerliche Gewerbe
eben, bürgerlich und schlicht betrieben. Was unscheinbar ist,
hat auch seinen Stolz und seine Größe. Jetzt aber will ich der
Schreibstubenleidenschaft, die sich nach und nach eingefunden,
Lebewohl sagen und nur meinen kleineren Spielereien leben, daß ich
auch einen Nachsommer habe wie dein Risach.«
Als wir einige Zeit in dem Rosenhause verweilt hatten, traten eines
Tages Natalie und ich zu unserem neuen Vater und baten ihn, er möge
ein Versprechen von uns annehmen, dessen Annahme uns sehr freuen
wurde.
»Und was ist das?« fragte er.
»Daß wir, wenn du uns dereinst in dieser Welt früher verlassen
solltest als wir dich, keine Veränderung in allem, wie es sich in dem
Hause und in der Besitzung vorfindet, machen wollen, damit dein teures
Andenken bestehe und forterbe«, sagten wir.
»Da tut ihr zu viel«, antwortete er, »ihr verspreche etwas, dessen
Größe ihr nicht kennt. Diese Bande darf ich nicht um euren Willen und
eure Verhältnisse legen, sie könnten von den übelsten Folgen sein.
Wollt ihr mein Gedächtnis in mannigfachem Bestehenlassen ehren, tut es
und pflanzt auch euren Nachkommen diesen Sinn ein, sonst ändert, wir
ihr wünscht und wie es not tut. Wir wollen, so lange ich lebe, selber
noch mit einander ändern, verschönern, bauen; ich will noch eine
Freude haben, und mit euch zu ändern und zu wirken ist mir lieber, als
wenn ich es allein tue.«
»Aber der Erlenbach muß als Denkmal der schönen Geräte bestehen
bleiben.«
»Setzt eine Urkunde auf, daß ihm nichts angetan werde von Geschlecht
zu Geschlecht, bis seine Reste vermodern oder ein Wolkenguß ihn von
seiner Stelle feget.«
Er küßte Natalien, wie er gerne tat, auf die Stirne, mir reichte er
die Hand.
Als die Rosenzeit wirklich recht innig und zum Staunen meiner
Angehörigen, welche so etwas nie gesehen hatten, vorüber gegangen war,
nahmen wir Abschied, die Vereinigung, welche nun so lange bestanden
hatte, löste sich und die Tage kehrten in ihren gewöhnlichen Abfluß
zurück. Meine Eltern gingen mit Klotilden in den Gusterhof, wo sie bis
zum Winter bleiben wollten, und ich siedelte mit Natalien in unsere
ständige Wohnung in den Sternenhof über. Wir sollten nun die
eigentliche Familie desselben sein, Mathilde werde bei uns wohnen und
mit an unserem Tische speisen. Die Bewirtschaftung des Gutes sollte
ebenfalls ich leiten. Ich übernahm die Pflicht und bat um Mathildens
Beihilfe, so ausgedehnt sie dieselbe leisten wolle. Sie sagte es zu.
So rückte nun die Zeit in ihr altes Recht, und ein einfaches,
gleichmäßiges Leben ging Woche nach Woche dahin.
Nur im Herbste fand eine Abwechslung statt. Die Vettern aus dem
Geburtshause des Vaters besuchten meine Eltern in dem Gusterhofe. Wir
fuhren zu ihnen hinüber. Der Vater ließ sie reichlich beschenkt in
einem Wagen in ihre Heimat zurückführen.
Mit Beginn des Winters war Rolands Bild fertig. Es war seiner Größe
willen zu rollen, hatte einen großen Goldrahmen, der zu zerlegen war,
und wurde in dem Marmorsaale auf einer Staffelei aufgestellt. Wir
reisten alle in den Asperhof. Das Bild wurde vielfach betrachtet und
besprochen. Roland war in einer gehobenen, schwebenden Stimmung;
denn was auch die Meinung seiner Umgebung war, wie sehr sie auch das
Hervorgebrachte lobte und wohl auch Hindeutungen gab, was noch zu
verbessern wäre: so mochte ihm sein Inneres versprechen, daß er einmal
vielleicht noch weit Höheres, ja ein ganz Großes zu Stande zu bringen
vermögen werde. Risach sagte ihm die Mittel zu, reisen zu können und
ordnete die Zubereitung zu einer baldigen Abreise nach Rom an. Gustav
mußte noch den Winter im Asperhofe zubringen. Im Frühlinge sollte er
endlich in die Welt gehen.
So waren nun mannigfaltige Beziehungen geordnet und geknöpft.
Mathilde hatte einmal, da ich sie im Sternenhofe besuchte, zu mir
gesagt, das Leben der Frauen sei ein beschränktes und abhängiges,
sie und Natalie hätten den Halt von Verwandten verloren, sie müßten
Manches aus sich schöpfen wie ein Mann und in dem Widerscheine ihrer
Freunde leben. Das sei ihre Lage, sie daure ihrer Natur nach fort und
gehe ihrer Entwicklung entgegen. Ich hatte mir die Worte gemerkt und
hatte sie tief ins Herz genommen.
Ein Teil dieser Entwicklung, glaubte ich nun, war gekommen, der zweite
wird mit Gustavs Ansiedlung eintreten. An mir hatten die Frauen wieder
einen Halt gewonnen, daß sich ein fester Kern ihres Daseins wieder
darstelle; ein neues Band war durch mich von ihnen zu den Meinigen
geschlungen, und selbst das Verhältnis zu Risach hatte an Rundung und
Festigkeit gewonnen. Den Abschluß der Familienzusammengehörigkeit wird
dann Gustav bringen.
Was mich selber anbelangt, so hatte ich nach der gemeinschaftlichen
Reise in die höheren Lande die Frage an mich gestellt, ob ein Umgang
mit lieben Freunden, ob die Kunst, die Dichtung, die Wissenschaft das
Leben umschreibe und vollende oder ob es noch ein Ferneres gäbe, das
es umschließe und es mit weit größerem Glück erfülle. Dieses größere
Glück, ein Glück, das unerschöpflich scheint, ist mir nun von einer
ganz anderen Seite gekommen als ich damals ahnte. Ob ich es nun in der
Wissenschaft, der ich nie abtrünnig werden wollte, weit werde bringen
können, ob mir Gott die Gnade geben wird, unter den Großen derselben
zu sein, das weiß ich nicht; aber eines ist gewiß, das reine
Familienleben, wie es Risach verlangt, ist gegründet, es wird, wie
unsre Neigung und unsre Herzen verbürgen, in ungeminderter Fülle
dauern, ich werde meine Habe verwalten, werde sonst noch nutzen, und
jedes, selbst das wissenschaftliche Bestreben, hat nun Einfachheit,
Halt und Bedeutung.

Was mich selber anbelangt, so hatte ich nach der gemeinschaftlichen
Reise in die höheren Lande die Frage an mich gestellt, ob ein Umgang
mit lieben Freunden, ob die Kunst, die Dichtung, die Wissenschaft das
Leben umschreibe und vollende oder ob es noch ein Ferneres gäbe, das
es umschließe und es mit weit größerem Glück erfülle. Dieses größere
Glück, ein Glück, das unerschöpflich scheint, ist mir nun von einer
ganz anderen Seite gekommen als ich damals ahnte. Ob ich es nun in der
Wissenschaft, der ich nie abtrünnig werden wollte, weit werde bringen
können, ob mir Gott die Gnade geben wird, unter den Großen derselben
zu sein, das weiß ich nicht; aber eines ist gewiß, das reine
Familienleben, wie es Risach verlangt, ist gegründet, es wird, wie
unsre Neigung und unsre Herzen verbürgen, in ungeminderter Fülle
dauern, ich werde meine Habe verwalten, werde sonst noch nutzen, und
jedes, selbst das wissenschaftliche Bestreben, hat nun Einfachheit,
Halt und Bedeutung.
